Charlie Byrne’s Book Clubs for Children, Teens and Young Adults!

Trish Forde novel launch 6 (1)What’s that you say? Book clubs for kids?! That’s right! For the first time ever, Charlie Byrne’s Bookshop will be holding book clubs for children, teens and young adults! These book clubs will take place on a monthly basis in our kids’ section with kids’ section manager Ruth!

Do you love books? Are you constantly reading? Are you a regular at Charlie Byrne’s? If the answer to any of these is yes, why not join our new children’s book clubs! We will be hosting two free separate book clubs at the end of every month, one for children aged 9-11, and another for teens and young adults aged 16-18 for all the Galway bookworms out there! The aim of these book clubs is to promote and nurture reading for fun among children and teens, as well as helping with their creative and critical thinking in a fun and social way. This is the perfect way for kids to share their ideas, opinions and different tastes while improving their confidence through reading.

Kid’s Book Club (Ages 9-11 years)

The-Astounding-Broccoli-Boy

The Astounding Broccoli Boy by Frank Cottrell Boyce

Meetings for our kid’s book club will take place at the end of every month from 4:30-5:30pm in our kid’s section. For our first meeting, Ruth has chosen to read Frank Cottrell Boyce’s The Astounding Broccoli Boy, but after this books will be chosen by popular vote from our members. Unfortunately we will only be able to offer 15 places within this club, this will be allocated on a first come first serve basis upon completion of our sign up forms which will be available in store. This program will run from September 2015 to May 2016 and is a club for children who already have a passion for reading for pleasure and want to expand their reading horizons. The important thing to remember about this club is that it is supposed to be fun! Our discussions will be enjoyable, taking in everyone’s opinion (both good and bad) of our chosen books, with some fun activities and baked treats along the way!

Our first meeting for our Kids’ Book Club will take place at 4:30pm in the kids’ section of Charlie Byrne’s on Tuesday the 29th of September 2015. Books are available in store now.

Young Adult Book Club (Ages 16-18 years)

Feed

Feed by MT Anderson

Meetings for our teen and young adult book club will take place on a monthly basis from 5-6pm in our kids’ section. For our first meeting, Ruth has chosen to read M.T Anderson’s Feed, but after this books will be chosen by popular vote from our members. Although we will be reading primarily teen and YA fiction, there may be some crossover into adult fiction if the members so choose. Our teen and Young Adult Book Clubs run from September 2015 to May 2016 and will be held on drop in rather than a sign up basis. This means that if you choose to join our book club at a later stage, or you can’t make it during a particular month, that is perfectly OK: we will take your email address and keep you updated on our book choices should you be free to attend again. This book club is perfect for anyone between the ages of 16-18 who loves to read and would like a creative outlet for this outside of school reading. As with our younger book clubs, these discussions will be purely for enjoyment’s sake, and all opinions, both good and bad, will be more than welcome. The livelier the debate the better!

Our first meeting for our Teen and Young Adult Book Club will be taking place at 5pm in the kids’ section of Charlie Byrne’s Bookshop on Wednesday the 30th of September 2015. Books are available in store now.

Although the cost of our book clubs will be free, members will have to pay for their chosen book every month. Every effort will be made to try and keep costs down by selecting bargain books; however, any new releases or books that have to be specially ordered in will inevitably be available only at full price. A 10% discount will be available and applied at the cash register to book club members’ purchases of that month’s chosen book.

If you would like to join either of our book clubs, please pop into Charlie Byrne’s Bookshop and simply fill out a sign-up sheet. Places for the younger book club may fill up fast, so please apply with plenty of time to avoid disappointment. For questions or queries simply contact Ruth here or ask for her in the store where you will most likely find her in the kids’ section.
