Leabhar Mór na nAmhrán ainmnithe mar Leabhar na Bliana 2013

Bhí iomaíocht ghéar do ghradam na bliana seo, cúig leabhar a bhí ainmnithe ar an ngearrliosta don ghradam a bhíonn urraithe ag Foras na Gaeilge agus á riaradh ag Oireachtas na Gaeilge gach bliain. Bailiúcháin d’os cionn 400 amhrán ar an sean-nós atá sa leabhar agus nóta staire ag dul le gach ceann acu. Is é an scríbhneoir agus bunaitheoir Chló Iar-Chonnacht, Micheál Ó Conghaile, a bhailigh na hamhráin sa leabhar agus is iad Lochlainn Ó Tuairisg, Eagarthóir Chló Iar-Chonnacht agus Peadar Ó Ceannabháin, Léachtóir agus amhránaí ar an sean-nós, a rinne eagarthóireacht orthu.

Leabhar é seo don scoláire, don amhránaí agus do dhuine ar bith ar suim leo teacht ar thuiscint níos leithne ar amhránaíocht thraidisiúnta na Gaeilge. Ceithre chéad amhrán traidisiúnta Gaeilge, ar an sean-nós, atá ann. Ó cheann ceann na tíre iad agus tá nótaí cuimsitheacha cúlra ag dul le gach uile cheann díobh maidir le cé dar díóbh iad, cé a chum, an chaoi ar scaipeadh iad agus an dream a chasann iad sa lá atá inniu ann.

Tá amhráin sa leabhar seo a bhfuil eolas go forleathan orthu agus amhráin nach bhfuil an cur amach céanna ag daoine orthu. Tá amhráin bheaga agus amhráin mhóra anseo, iad fada agus gearr, mall agus sciobtha, sean agus óg. Tá costas €25 ar Leabhar Mór na nAmhrán.

‘Ba iad na hamhráin seo a choinnigh beo iad scaití, a thug faoiseamh, sólás, misneach, pléisiúr éigin is dóchas dóibh in am an ghátair. Ba saibhreas anama san am sin iad is níor ligeadar in éag ná le sruth iad. Inniu labhrann siad le pobal seo ár linne chomh hábalta céanna.’

Irish-Language Book of the Year award for Leabhar Mór na nAmhrán

Competition for this year’s competition was fierce and Leabhar Mór na nAmhrán was one of five titles shortlisted for the award which is sponsored by Foras na Gaeilge and administered by Oireachtas na Gaeilge. The book contains over 400 traditional Irish sean-nós songs and accompanying historical notes with each song. Cló Iar-Chonnacht founder, the author Micheál Ó Conghaile, collected the songs in this book and Cló Iar-Chonnacht Chief Editor, Lochlainn Ó Tuairisg and lecturer and sean-nós singer, Peadar Ó Ceannabháin edited the collection. This book is a treasure trove of Ireland’s singing heritage.

This is a book for students, for singers and for anyone who would like to gain a wider understanding of traditional Irish singing. It contains over 400 traditional Irish sean-nós songs gathered from all over the country. Each song is accompanied by comprehensive background notes on the origins of the songs, the composers, the myriad ways that the songs radiated into the tradition and notes on the people who sing the songs today.

Leabhar Mór na nAmhrán contains both well-known songs and less well-known songs. There are big songs and small songs, long and short songs, fast and short songs and new and old songs. Leabhar Mór na nAmhrán is €25.

These are the songs that, at times, kept the people alive. Songs that gave comfort, solace, courage, pleasure and hope when times were hard. They were songs to raise the spirit and the people held them to their hearts. These songs are as compelling today as they were in times gone by.’-Micheál Ó Conghaile
